_ Makunduchi Project GOSH Comic Relief Shelter Live 8 _

Makunchi ProjectMobile Interactive Group has been involved with various charities, utilising its proprietary technology to enable mobile donations for Comic Relief raising £7.8 million via SMS; building a mobile internet presence and CRM initiative to raise brand awareness for Shelter and enabling the first ever SMS ticket lottery for Live8 raising £3.5 million for the charity.

More recently Mobile Interactive Group partnered with the Makunduchi Project.

The aim of the Makunduchi Project is to renovate, equip and run the hospital in Makunduchi in southern Zanzibar, where many of the 60,000 or so locals have little or no access to healthcare. The key premise of the project is based on the principle of delivering high quality local care in district hospitals, within the district setting.

The Makunduchi Project

Zanzibar, known as the 'Spice Island', lies in the Indian Ocean just 6 degrees south of the equator. Magnificent sandy beaches and coral reefs create a sense of paradise... The reality is stark however:

  • Average life expectancy is just 49 years
  • 1 in 7 children die under the age of 7 and two thirds of these are less than 2 years old.
  • 1 in 180 women die following delivery of their child

The Makunduchi Hospital

Makunduchi Hospital is one of only two District Hospitals on the main island of Zanzibar and serves the whole population of the South District. Construction of a new link road has recently been completed and will further increase the catchment area for the hospital by at least 20,000 people.
Currently the medical services provided are largely primary care, basic maternity services and some minor surgery, with the occupancy of its 30 beds for in-patients, being very low at around 13%. The low occupancy rate reflects a gradual erosion of trust in the hospital facility.
Following a detailed assessment of local health needs, The Makunduchi Hospital will focus re-development on these key areas:

  • Accident and Emergencies service
  • Maternity / Obstetrics care
  • Major Communicable Diseases service
  • An expansion of Surgical services
  • Family Planning and health education services
  • Basic Dental and Ophthalmology services

The Team

A team of experienced individuals both in Zanzibar and the UK who are taking the project forward and include Dr. These include Dr Ruaraidh MacDonagh (Chairman), who's a Consultant surgeon in the UK and has worked extensively in Africa, Dr John McGrath (Trustee), Consultant surgeon in the UK and has worked both in Zanzibar and in Tanzania, Dr Mohammed Jiddawi, Consultant surgeon who has lived and worked his whole life in Zanzibar and many more specialists.

Progress so far

A team of diversely experienced people has now been assembled to work on the project. With full Government support, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Zanzibar on 15th Dec 2007. It sets out our relationships with both national and local government as well as the financial support the project will attract.
To date the charity has succeeded in raising £100,000 / $150,000 - The below outlines key achievements to date:

  1. Primary Care Unit (PCU), opened 24th July 2008
  2. Surgical Theatre Renovated (STR), opened end Sept 2008 ($10,000) – Needs new bed and theatre light as electricity not reliable, therefore needs battery/generator back up
  3. Maternity Unit (MU), in planning and scheduled to open by May 2009
  4. Major Theatre Unit (MTU) – To supersede the Surgical Theatre Renovation (STR) as this is only a short term measure. The STR is not set up for ‘C’ sections or major multiple traumas. At present all current traumas are sent to Mnazimoja Hostital which is at least hours by local transport
    • The above units complete basic hospital services
    • All work has and will continue to be completed by local contractors and community workers in Zanzibar

Where the money goes

Glad you asked. Unlike many other organizations, apart from the costs of running a small support and development team, all donations will reach the local Makunduchi Project.

A 10 year plan has been agreed with the President of Zanzibar and we work closely with the Minister of Health in progressing with the project.

The Minister of Health, Dr Mohammed Jiddawi, and others locally are working together to train enough staff to work within the hospital and subsequently enough staff to work elsewhere in Zanzibar.
